The REDD+ process was conceived by the international community as a tool to encourage developing countries to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the forest sector, through financial compensation for the efforts made. It is particularly oriented towards the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions due to deforestation and forest degradation, sustainable forest management, conservation and enhancement of forest carbon stocks, hence its acronym REDD+.
The National REDD+ Strategy organizes, guides and gives the directions to be followed to achieve GHG reduction. It contributes to the fight against climate change and ensures sustainable development through the restoration of the environment prior to that of soil fertility on which sustainable agriculture depends, a major objective contributing to the achievement of food security.
As the only Sahelian country engaged in the REDD+ process, Burkina Faso’s main challenge is to achieve REDD+ in a country with a Sahelian ecosystem. The Government, by adopting this National REDD+ Strategy, places Burkina Faso in an innovative dynamic of management of forest resources, in particular and renewable natural resources, in general.
Reduce deforestation and forest degradation by 50% by 2030 through increasing vegetation cover, recovering degraded land, and improving the living conditions of populations, especially rural ones. The digital platform effectively supports the various monitoring and evaluation components including: (i) business planning, (ii) technical and financial execution monitoring, (iii) indicator monitoring, (iv) reporting, (v) electronic document management, (vi) geospatial representations and (vii) interoperability with other existing systems.
